My name is Heather and I created The Sacred Pause to help guide wired + tired humans to find true calm + balance using holistic herbal methods.
This substack delivers weekly herb profiles, articles, poetic musings, recipes, somatic practices + more… all around the theme of exploring what it means to heal through learning how to slow down + tune in. By learning how to take a Sacred Pause, and over time, embody The Sacred Pause as a lifestyle.
This embodiment has transformed my life and particularly the relationship I have with stress + anxiety, and how I approach these experiences with my clients.
As someone who has worked in the wellness industry for 10+ years and is a practicing Certified Clinical Herbalist + Nutritionist, herbalism, plant life, and the natural world are some of my biggest sources of inspiration and a solid part of the foundation of what I will share with you in The Sacred Pause Substack.
However, herbs alone are not the answer. There is no magic “herbal” pill or natural panacea that will cure you of all your ailments, including stress + anxiety.
What I’ve discovered in my own practice as an herbalist is that the real “magic” behind herbalism lies in the integration. The big life shifts start to happen when we commit to building a relationship with our herbs in tandem with building a relationship with ourselves, our health, and our lives as a whole.
After I unearthed this simple truth, I readapted my herbal practice from “clinical” to holistic.
When the pandemic started, we all witnessed the entire world quake in deep stress and anxiety. Collectively and personally, I felt how deeply affected my own nervous system became and I began to witness this in my clients. As we start to emerge into a new semblance of "normal", I continue to see and feel how many of us have not had the time, space, and skills to regulate on top of our already busy and chaotic lives.
I kept hearing (and continue to hear) the common threads of “needing more time”, "feeling burnt out”, “just needing a break”, and “wishing life would slow down” in my community, amongst my clients, and in my own life. There has been a collective need for deep rest pulsing within for a while now and it is beginning to bubble up to the surface.
With this inspiration, I created The Sacred Pause course: a 4-week online program to help regulate the nervous system through waves of stress + anxiety.
The results have been deeply profound + beautiful for those who have participated (and I plan to continue offering this course again in the future)… but beyond the 4-week transformational, deep-dive that the course offers, the essence of The Sacred Pause begs to be integrated into our everyday lives in a way that is easy + accessible for anyone and everyone.
This is why The Sacred Pause Substack was born.
The Sacred Pause Substack weaves together the magic + knowledge of herbalism with psychology, somatic movement, philosophy, anthropology, and more… to help us unearth the true roots of “wellness” so we can actually feel “well” on a daily basis again.
All by slowing down and tuning in.
By learning how to pause within the chaos of our lives. Using herbs + somatic practices as our allies + anchors along the way.
And by embracing the paradox that when we take small, devoted amounts of time to pause with intention, we actually give ourselves more time in the long run.
As this collective continues to grow, my vision is to keep you inspired + motivated to learn, explore, practice, and embody the way of The Sacred Pause.
The beautiful work of learning how to slow down, savor sacred pauses in our daily life, and regulate the nervous system with herbs + practices does not stop after 1 article, using 1 herb, or taking a 4-week course. Especially when we have a lifetime of previous patterning and an uber-fast society that is constantly pushing us to rush, run, and stress our way through life.
This is a continual lifelong process of embodiment.
And in order to actualize it, every day we have to choose to “pitch our flag” in the earth in favor of this new way of living. In favor of slowing down and savoring life again, one sacred pause at a time.
Life is meant to be savored.
